The collection

A working library, not a museum piece

The hall is still in use. These are the numbers behind the room.

  1. 8th c. The first collection The abbey's monks had assembled a library of real consequence before the Carolingian era was out.
  2. 1758–1767 The present hall Built under Peter Thumb of the Bregenzerwald. Rococo at full volume, and still the room you walk into.
  3. 160,000 Volumes held The collection is active, catalogued and consulted, not sealed behind glass.
  4. 400+ Over a thousand years old Early medieval manuscripts, a rotating selection of which is on display in the hall.
  5. 1983 UNESCO inscription The Abbey District entered the World Heritage List for the precinct and the collection together.

October to June from 10:00 to 17:00, and July to September from 10:00 to 18:00. Last admission is 15 minutes before closing. All three exhibitions close from 9 to 23 November 2026 and on 24 and 25 December 2026.

Entry is not tied to a time slot. Your ticket is for the day you choose and you arrive whenever suits during opening hours. The visit is self-guided, so it does not depend on the language you speak.
Museum passes
Holders of a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Museum Pass, Raiffeisen Member card, St.Gallen Museum Card, OSKAR or Bodensee Card PLUS, or ICOM/VMS membership enter free. Collect the free ticket at the Abbey District ticket office, and do not buy one online.

Do I need to book a time slot for the Abbey Library?

No. Entry is for the day you choose rather than a fixed time, so you arrive whenever suits during opening hours.

What does the ticket cover?

One ticket admits you to all three exhibitions in the UNESCO Abbey District of St Gallen: the Abbey Library hall, the Vaulted Cellar beneath it, and the Exhibition Hall.

When is it open?

From October to June the exhibitions open 10:00 to 17:00, and from July to September 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission 15 minutes before closing. All three exhibitions close from 9 to 23 November 2026 and on 24 and 25 December 2026.

Is there a guided tour?

The exhibitions are self-guided, so the visit does not depend on which language you speak. The Abbey District also runs short public tours in German at set times, included in the ticket.

How old is the library hall?

The present rococo hall was built between 1758 and 1767 under the Bregenzerwald master builder Peter Thumb. The collection itself goes back to the eighth century.

How many books are there?

The working collection runs to about 160,000 volumes, and more than 400 of them are over a thousand years old.

Do children need a ticket?

Children under 16 accompanied by a parent enter free and do not need a ticket from us. Students, apprentices and pupils have their own reduced ticket.

Can I use a museum pass?

Yes, and you should not buy a ticket from us if you hold one. A Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Museum Pass, Raiffeisen Member card, St.Gallen Museum Card, OSKAR or Bodensee Card PLUS, or ICOM/VMS membership gives free entry. You collect the free ticket at the Abbey District ticket office.

Why is the Abbey District a World Heritage Site?

UNESCO inscribed the Abbey District of St Gallen on the World Heritage List in 1983, for the abbey precinct and the library collection it preserves.
