Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book a time slot for the Abbey Library?

No. Entry is for the day you choose rather than a fixed time, so you arrive whenever suits during opening hours.

What does the ticket cover?

One ticket admits you to all three exhibitions in the UNESCO Abbey District of St Gallen: the Abbey Library hall, the Vaulted Cellar beneath it, and the Exhibition Hall.

When is it open?

From October to June the exhibitions open 10:00 to 17:00, and from July to September 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission 15 minutes before closing. All three exhibitions close from 9 to 23 November 2026 and on 24 and 25 December 2026.

Is there a guided tour?

The exhibitions are self-guided, so the visit does not depend on which language you speak. The Abbey District also runs short public tours in German at set times, included in the ticket.

How old is the library hall?

The present rococo hall was built between 1758 and 1767 under the Bregenzerwald master builder Peter Thumb. The collection itself goes back to the eighth century.

How many books are there?

The working collection runs to about 160,000 volumes, and more than 400 of them are over a thousand years old.

Do children need a ticket?

Children under 16 accompanied by a parent enter free and do not need a ticket from us. Students, apprentices and pupils have their own reduced ticket.

Can I use a museum pass?

Yes, and you should not buy a ticket from us if you hold one. A Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Museum Pass, Raiffeisen Member card, St.Gallen Museum Card, OSKAR or Bodensee Card PLUS, or ICOM/VMS membership gives free entry. You collect the free ticket at the Abbey District ticket office.

Why is the Abbey District a World Heritage Site?

UNESCO inscribed the Abbey District of St Gallen on the World Heritage List in 1983, for the abbey precinct and the library collection it preserves.

Are you the Abbey District?

No. We are an independent booking service. We buy the official ticket on your behalf and send it to you. We are not affiliated with the Abbey District of St Gallen.
